Job Description

MULTIPLE POSITIONS WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS VACANCY.

This position will provide security services for Old Dominion University. Other duties include: monitor main and satellite campus grounds to ensure staff, students and visitors are safe; make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis; and identify and assist with the investigation of minor or suspicious matters.

Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions to complete assigned tasks and reports. Basic familiarity with personal computers to include Microsoft Office, Outlook etc. Ability to perform essential physical requirements which include standing and/or walking for extended periods. Ability to perform required tasks during periods of inclement weather. Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance/uniform and report for duty on time. Ability to provide security services which includes working inside and outside of building during various hours of the day.

Special licenses, registration or certification

Valid driver’s license and insurable record. Ability to obtain the DCJS CSO Campus Security Officer Certification within one year of employment.

Education or training

High school diploma or GED.

Level and type of experience

Some security experience.

Preferred knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification

Some training in security work. Associate degree. Member of professional security organization i.e., ASIS International, CCP (Certified Protection Professional). Experience and training as a Campus Security Officer. Experience working with security related technologies, surveillance cameras, access control, etc.

Conditions of Employment

Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime required. Must successfully pass a criminal background investigation. Considered “essential personnel” for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during those conditions.

Hourly (wage) employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 – April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement, or leave.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate Salary is commensurate with education and experience and begins at $ - 12.36 per hour part-time
