Job Description

In a high-pressure and high-stress environment, this position manages and prioritizes all emergency and non-emergency calls for service received by the University Police Department. Other duties include making appropriate and accurate entries while tracking movements of Police Officers in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; operating VCIN/NCIC Computer terminal to provide accurate DMV and VCIN/NCIC checks for Police Officers; monitoring fire, panic, and intrusion alarms; and operating two-way voice radio equipment in compliance with Departmental and FCC directives.

Special licenses, registration or certification

Must have ability to obtain and maintain certification to operate Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) computer system. Must have ability to obtain Commonwealth of Virginia certification as a Police Dispatcher. Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.

Education or training

High School diploma or equivalent.

Level and type of experience

Some customer service experience. Some experience working in a law enforcement or security setting. Some experience working in a college setting.

Preferred knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification

Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia as Police Dispatcher. Virginia State Police VCIN certification. Some college preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime required. Must successfully pass a criminal background investigation. Must obtain VCIN certification within one year of hire.
Considered “essential personnel” for emergency conditions and inclement weather and expected to report to duty during those conditions.
