Job Description

The Dance Program of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University seeks to hire an assistant professor of dance (tenure track) who is highly skilled and professionally active, and will add to the program’s national and international recognition. This person will provide opportunities and connections in the field for our students while modeling the work of being a professional artist and/or scholar. Furthermore, it is our desire that this person will contribute to the program’s visibility and possibly help to expand the program in new and exciting directions. Old Dominion University offers a BA in Theatre Arts with Emphasis in Dance, Dance Education and a Dance Minor. A lively arts community includes Virginia Ballet Theatre, The Virginia Arts Festival, Todd Rosenlieb Dance, ArtPile, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera and Virginia Stage Company.

Expectations include teaching three courses or equivalent per semester in dance technique and theory. Depending on the strengths of the candidate, responsibilities for this position may include some of the following: choreography, student mentoring, student recruitment, advising, course development, curriculum development, departmental planning, college committees, audience development, community outreach, grant writing, production of dance concerts, advising students, and serving on departmental committees. This position is a recurring 10-month contract that begins in July 2018, with full benefits.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities

Experience teaching at the university level, excellent writing and communication skills, demonstrated scholarly/creative research potential, and demonstrated ability to teach a range of dance courses including dance history (writing intensive), and all levels of ballet or modern technique.

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

MFA or PhD in Dance or closely related field. If the degree requirements are not met, then exceptional professional experience and/or substantial evidence of teaching excellence may be presented in lieu of some formal academic credentials for teaching in accordance with the SACSCOC guidelines for exceptional credentialing.

Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification
Preferred Qualifications

Ability to teach courses in two or more of the following: dance appreciation, dance composition, global dance forms (preference given to African diaspora, hip-hop and/or North American vernacular dance forms), dance/movement analysis, somatic techniques, dance for screen/new media. Demonstrated grant writing ability. National/international recognition for research, choreography and/or performance. Ability to collaborate with colleagues within the dance program and across disciplines. Administrative ability will be highly valued.
